Central to the debate, was the European Commission's new ‘Fit for 55’ package, which aims to reduce pollutant emissions by 55 percent by 2030. Given that the transport sector accounts for 25 percent of emissions, a substantial contribution is expected to achieve the objectives set.
In his speech, Karousos briefed his counterparts on the ambitious policy framework adopted in Cyprus to promote e-mobility."We have set as a national goal for 2030, to have at least 25 percent new registrations of electric vehicles in the whole year. This number will increase by 50 percent on an annual basis," said the minister.
During the discussion on the development of electric vehicle recharging infrastructure, Karousos analysed the integrated policy of Cyprus which includes the strategic objectives, the development of the necessary legal framework as well as other measures to be taken, such as incentives and monitoring system to achieve the objectives, also taking into account the need for cooperation between the public and private sectors.
Karousos also explained that, "Apart from the recharging points in residences, in Cyprus we will have more than 1,000 recharging points by 2026 in government buildings, businesses, hospitals, highways, public parking lots, restaurants, hotels and other places. In addition, the extensive network of gas stations we have in Cyprus will be used and we are currently making the necessary regulatory adjustments to allow these stations to install recharging points using renewable energy sources."
