Original ‘Give a Name’ Competition for Reef in Larnaca

The Cyprus Institute for Maritime and Shipping (CMMI), the Cyprus Youth Organisation, the Larnaca Tourism Board (LTB) and the Geoimaging Company announced the holding of the original "Give a Name" competition.

The natural reef in question is located at a depth of 7-10 m in the bay of Larnaca, and specifically in the marine protected area of Voroklini, very close to the ship LEF1 that was sunk earlier in 2020.

The reef is extremely interesting in terms of the existence of marine life since many species of sponges are attached to it, while it is surrounded by dense meadows of Poseidonia. In the area one can easily find many fish species. It is emphasised that fishing in the area is prohibited by a relevant decree.

It is worth noting that this sea ‘oasis,’ will soon be mapped on the initiative of the Larnaca Tourism Board by the CMMI scientific team and will be part of the Larnaca Diving Routes under development.

The purpose of this competition is to give a name to this important reef while giving the opportunity to the children of Larnaca province to be actively involved in the naming process. The reef, due to its shallow depth, could be a new point for snorkelling.

The competition, which is addressed exclusively to students of primary schools in the city and province of Larnaca from the third to the sixth grade, is under the auspices of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research and will last from April 21 to May 25, of this year.
