Cyprus Integrates Artificial Intelligence to Elevate Tourism Competitiveness

Cyprus is setting its sights on a digitally transformed future, as Costas Koumis, deputy Miniter of tourism for the republic, and Dimitris Skouridis, chief scientist, met on Wednesday, August 12, to align the nation’s tourism framework with artificial intelligence.

The high-level strategy session at the Deputy Ministry of Tourism centered on a comprehensive presentation led by the Chief Scientist’s team entitled, ‘Smart Tourism 2032: The Cyprus AI Strategy’. The proposal forms a core component of the ongoing public consultation for the National AI Strategy, which remains open through August 31.

A Vision for ‘Smart Tourism 2032’

The newly detailed roadmap positions Cyprus as an interactive ‘Living Lab’, merging advanced technological capabilities with traditional Cypriot hospitality. The strategic framework relies on three core pillars designed to benefit local stakeholders, with a dedicated focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs):

  • Smart Tourism Infrastructure: Modernising foundational digital assets across the sector.
  • Smart Destination Design and Management: Utilising data-driven insights for efficient resource and destination handling.
  • The Empowered Digital Tourist: Enhancing traveller engagement from pre-trip planning to on-island experiences.

 Balancing Technology and Human Touch

During discussions, Koumis noted that artificial intelligence has rapidly reshaped global travel behaviours, influencing everything from preliminary information collection and itinerary organisation to destination marketing.
