The bus stops/shelters in question, are pilot-model samples that will be placed in wider Cyprus within the framework of the project concerning the upgrading of infrastructure, bus stops and bus shelters throughout Cyprus with a total value of EUR60 million (plus VAT), including 15 years of maintenance and extensions, for which the tender is in progress.
The uniform design of the stands/shelters was prepared by Demades Design Ltd, Industrial Designer, with which the Department of Public Works was contracted following an open tender and takes into account the conditions and data of Cyprus and achieves uniformity, scalability to adapt to the available space and usage needs, accessibility for disabled use, safety and weather protection, lighting, use of renewable energy sources and technology.
The purpose of the standard samples, which were manufactured by the project's industrial designer, is to confirm the correctness of the design and requirements of the object of the major project, as well as the correctness of the materials and the method of construction.
The installation of the first stands/shelters of the project on a pan-Cypriot scale is expected to start in early 2023 and includes installation:
- 350 pillars with integrated technology,
- 2,000 simple pillars,
- 1,350 small shelters,
- 650 large shelters for urban areas,
- 100 large sheds suitable for mountainous areas,
- repair and reposition more than 600 existing roofs,
- photovoltaic systems and connection to a fixed electricity supply network, and
- 200 bike racks and bike racks in central locations to encourage cycling and sustainable multimodal transport.
The tender for the project in question is being conducted in two stages and the evaluation of the first stage has been completed so far. For this competition, 11 economic bodies have expressed interest, of which those who meet the participation criteria will be invited to submit a complete technical and financial Offer, as well as a sample of a roof as a demonstration of their technical ability.
The project is co-financed by the THALEIA European Regional Development Fund by 65 percent and by national resources by 35 percent and is part of the upgrading of public passenger transport infrastructure, with the ultimate aim of providing improved and increased service to public transport users.
The project falls within the objectives of the strategic plans of the Republic of Cyprus, including the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, municipalities and communities and is an integral part of the specialized plans being made for the transition to sustainable mobility and green development.
