A Municipality announcement noted that Seferis is known to have particularly loved Ayia Napa, dedicating two of his works to the town, more than any other place, including his homeland of Greece.

Organised with retailer Public and tour operator Discover Greek Culture Cultural, the March 10 event began at Thalassa Municipal Museum before participants visited places once frequented by Seferis. These included an old coffee shop, the monastery with its old sycamore tree immortalised inside Seferis’ poems, and the small harbour where the Greek poet often dined with Cypriot friends.

The tour was led by Demetra Ignatiou, cultural specialist, with interventions by Giorgos Georgis, associate professor, University of Cyprus, and Eleni Antoniadou, multidisciplinary researcher.

Seferis is considered to be one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th century. He was also a career diplomat with the Greek Foreign Service, culminating to his appointment as ambassador to the UK from 1957 to 1962. He was awarded the 1963 Nobel Prize for Literature.
