Completely Renovated Archaeological Museum of the Larnaka District Opens

Yiannis Karousos, minister of transport, communications & works, Cyprus, marked the completion of the upgrades at the Archaeological Museum of the Larnaka District during his visit to the fully renovated wings, and in the presence of the mayor of Larnaca, the presidents of Larnaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Larnaka Tourism Board, members of Parliament of the Larnaca and Ammochostos regions, as well as officers of the Department of Antiquities and members of the local media.

Attendees were guided around the museum by archaeologists from the Department of Antiquities and toured the two renovated wings as well as the new lower-level room dedicated to an impressive collection of sarcophagi. The exhibition is divided thematically into sections that ‘tell’ stories related to the daily life of the ancient inhabitants of Cyprus, including their arts and rituals.

Wing I traces a chronological course from 8000 B.C., until the 12th century B.C., with a plethora of exhibits that has been enriched with new findings from recent excavations. Wing II is dedicated to the Iron Age and includes four rooms. The first room presents exhibits that narrate the dynamism of ancient Kition, whilst the second room is dedicated to the sanctuaries of Mesaoria, where life-size statues are exhibited. The third room presents material from the tombs of Kition that provide information about the ancient civilization, whilst the fourth room itself exhibits the famous sarcophagi.

The museum is fully accessible for disabled persons and admission is free. The new opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday 09:00-16:30.
