The date marks the 1955 EOKA rebellion for the island to gain independence from the UK.
March 25 was commemorated with events at Antonis Tsokkos State Primary School and Kindergarten running up to Cyprus National Day, and a dedicated church service as well as a pupil, student and organisation parade along April 1 Avenue.
Vassiliki Anastasiadou, minister, transport, communications and works, viewed the parade on the government’s behalf.
On March 31, local organisations plan a candle-lit march along Makarios Avenue towards the harbour before returning to the Monastery Square. The March 31 event is scheduled to begin at 19:15, following the raising of the flag and placing of wreaths at the statues of heroes at Heroes’ Square.
