Strovolos Municipality Unveils Disposable Bag Reduction Campaign

The municipality of Strovolos and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus have launched an information campaign on the reduction of disposable plastic bags.

From July 01 in Cyprus, as in other countries of Europe, shoppers will be charged five cents for each disposable plastic bag they use. In the context of this campaign, an open dialogue on Ending the Plastics Circle was on June 08 organised for citizens and stakeholders.

These actions are broadly in line with the new pan-European strategy on plastics, environmental protection and green growth, announced in January by the European Commission. Within the same strategy, the Commission tabled proposals to further restrict disposable plastic products other than bags. The proposals cover items such as straws, stirrers, dishes and cutlery.
