Cyprus Takes Over the Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026

The Republic of Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, for the second time, 14 years after the first in 2012.

During this semester, each member state chairs the meetings in all configurations of the Council of the EU, ensuring the continuity and consistency of the work and legislative work of the Council of the EU.

Role of the Member State holding the Presidency

The Member State holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU ensures the following:

  • The continuation of the work (agenda) of the EU
  • The production of sound legislation – Cooperation between Member States
  • Cooperation and coordination between European institutions
  • Representation of the Council of the EU at sessions of the European Parliament
  • The coordination of the Union's positions in international organisations
