The suggestion was made following requests from tourism operators and other organised groups, with the aim of supporting highway users.
The operation of such infrastructures is very widespread in most countries abroad, where the distances are longer. In Cyprus, although the distances are relatively short, the proposal was evaluated positively, as it is expected to meet the needs of both local users of the network and visitors and tourists of the country.
Specifically, in the context of a study prepared by the Department of Public Works, the criterion of distance (density) of the relevant infrastructure is 30 km. After taking into account the main urban centres, as well as saving resources by utilizing existing public spaces and infrastructure (e.g., bus stations and weighing stations), these infrastructures will be set up, in the first phase, at the following points:
- Alhambra (section Alhambra - Nicosia)
2. Xylotympou (section Alhambra - Ayia Napa)
3. Kofinou (section Alhambra - Limassol)
4. Diocese (section Limassol - Paphos, direction from Paphos)
5. Mandria (section Limassol - Paphos, direction from Limassol).
In addition, in the second phase and with the completion of the road construction works, there will be public toilets, recharging stations and other facilities on the Nicosia-Astromeriti-Evrychos and Paphos-Poleos Chrysochous highways.
These points will provide 24-hour services, with sanitary facilities for men, women and the disabled, small cafeteria / kiosk facilities, as well as charging points for electric vehicles.
