Protection of Sea Turtles for the Summer Season

Cyprus’ Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (TATHE) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, has informed the public about the beginning of the spawning season of sea turtles in Cyprus from mid-May until the end of September.

Two species of sea turtles breed on the beaches of Cyprus, the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas and the Caretta caretta). In the Mediterranean, Green Turtles breed almost exclusively in Cyprus and Turkey. Caretta gives birth in Greece and in smaller numbers and in other Mediterranean countries.

In recent years there has been a general increase in the nesting of sea turtles and especially the Caretta turtle. It should be noted, however, that this increase is a result of the protection measures taken 20-25 years ago and that they continue to be taken. For this reason, sea turtles and their eggs are protected by the Fisheries Law (CHAPTER 135) and Regulations 1990 (Re g. No. 273/90) from 1971 and the protection of their habitat in the Laras region- Archer has been secured since 1989, with the administrative measures presented in the regulations of the same law.

TATHE urges the public visiting the protected area of Lara - Toxeftra to comply with applicable laws and regulations and to demonstrate the appropriate environmental behavior for the protection of sea turtles.

Within the protected area Lara - Toxeftra from June 01 - September 30 prohibited:

- the installation of umbrellas, beds, tents, caravans and / or any other stilts,

- the stay on the beach and the coastal area at night, starting one hour before sunset

- fishing in any way (nets, spearfishing, etc. except with shore rod)

It is also reminded that it is prohibited all year round:

- driving any vehicle on the beaches

- the collection of crabs from the beach which are a protected species throughout Cyprus

- pollution (garbage dumping)

- lighting a fire (coals etc)

Also noted that the passage or anchoring the vessel in the area is prohibited from May 01 up to October 31. Holders of small-scale coastal fishing professional licenses are exempt from the transit ban in May and October of each year.
