Akamas Becomes National Forest Park

Nicos Kouyialis, agriculture, rural development and environment minister, Cyprus, confirmed the approval

of a plan to turn the Akamas Peninsula into a protected national forest park.

The main aim is to safeguard nature and biodiversity in the area, thus, promoting sustainable development of the whole region, according to Kouyialis.

All of the Akamas Peninsula is part of European Union's Natura 2000, a network of core breeding and resting sites for threatened species, and rare natural habitat types which are protected in their own right. Overall, 28 percent of Cypriot land is part of the Natura 2000 prorgamme
