DFMR Establishes Natural Marine Area in Cape Greco

The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (MARE) is dedicated to marine biodiversity and the establishment of the first Natural Marine Protected Area (NMPA) in Cape Greco.

The establishment of NMPA recently came into force with the issue of a relevant decree by Kostas Kadis, minister, MARE. According to Kadis, it represents a pathway of continuous efforts to achieve MARE’s goal, which is the recovery of marine biodiversity and fish stocks, in order to have, healthy and productive marine ecosystems.

DFMR and MARE set as a strategic objective the protection of the marine environment and the development of a model of sustainable fisheries, to support fishermen, and the creation of new sustainable development prospects, thus contributing in the development of the coastal economy.
