Larnaka Municipality
The exciting and ambitious new Municipal Market project is expected to be delivered to Larnaka Municipality in July and thereafter the new shops will start operating. The two-storey, EU-funded structure is located on the site of the old traditional market and will include local stalls and artisan spaces alongside modern facilities, including cafes, restaurants, a stage for events, a dedicated exhibition area and parking.
Works to make the town centre more wheelchair and pushchair friendly through wider pavements and new squares are currently in full-swing and expected to complete by the end of the new year. The upgrades are part of the Larnaca town centre regeneration project.
The former Kition Club is also included in the Larnaca town centre regeneration project funds and will be renovated to highlight the British Colonial period architecture and for use as a multipurpose cultural and leisure space, due for completion by mid-year.
The Municipal Community Centre and Sports Hall located before Saint Lazarus Church is due for completion in the first half of the coming year and will serve as a multi-purpose, multi-hall cultural and leisure centre.
The relocation and renovation of Larnaca Tennis Courts are in the final stages with the new courts soon ready to offer state-of-the-art facilities for lessons and international tennis matches.
In addition to projects completed thisyear, work will begin on the grounds of Zuhouri Mosque, which will be transformed into a space for the arts with a new square, shops with a traditional character, and a youth hostel and artists' meeting point with a capacity of up to 20 beds. Completion is anticipated for the second half of 2021.
Larnaka-Dekeleia Road (Voroklini & Pyla)
Construction work on the Voroklini seafront pedestrian path - Phase B will complete in this year, extending the coastal walkway. Additional bus stops will also be added in the area that houses the region’s largest hotels.
Additionally, the Pyla part of the coastal road will be completed with new pavements and the installation of photovoltaic streetlamps.
Pervolia
Pervolia will continue with Phase B of its seafront pedestrian and cycle path and also begin upgrades in 2020 that include the creation of youth sports pitches; a new park and the planting of additional greenery in its tourist area.
Lefkara
The construction of a Conference Centre for up to 400 delegates will be completed in early this year, and the first phase of the new village square will be extended.
Athienou
Works continue for the renovation of the Municipal market to be expanded into a multi-functional cultural centre. The Hani of Mestana ancient inn is being readied for visitors and the Kallinikeion Municipal Museum and Father Kallinikos Stavrovouniotis traditional house are continually being upgraded and enriched.
The village centre is undergoing reconstruction and renovation, including the traditional facades on central buildings; the traditional fountain square and the square of Archangel Michael Church (paving, lighting, and the like).
Kiti
Plans have been submitted for the landscaping of the Tremithos riverbed with the project anticipated to begin in 2021. Included are: a 300-seat open-air amphiteathre; river footbridge; a pedestrian footpath along the river; enhancement of the medieval bridge and traditional buildings; the creation of a new playground; increased greenery, and new lighting.
Livadia
Works commence for the construction of a new multi-sports centre that will incorporate futsal, beach volleyball, tennis, handball, a large children’s play centre with climbing walls, water platform, rowing platform, mini golf, cycle path, outdoor gym equipment, green spaces, changing rooms, observatory and a caferteria.
Zygi
Works continue on the new linear park (renovating its pedestrian paths, children’s playground, and a refreshment kiosk) alongside the creation of a Maritime and Fisheries Museum.
Tochni
The village’s new sports park has been completed whilst the landscaping of the picturesque Kamara River area (including amphitheatre, pedestrian lanes and bridge, parking area, children’s playground, and increased greenery) is due by the end of 2021.
Choirokoitia
The cobbled paving of the village’s centre is being completed as part of a three-year project to upgrade the village’s core facilities and infrastructure in-line with its traditional character.
